Our mission is to advocate for responsible growth, preserve the nature of Tyrone and surrounding communities, and educate and inform residents to help them have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect our community. We are a non-profit, non-partisan, resident-led organization.

About Us

CURRENT Focus

We are currently working to inform our neighbors of the negative impact Project Rita will have on our community so that they can help stop or, at a minimum, significantly shape the project.

Project Rita is Microsoft's data center project in Tyrone, Georgia. We believe this development was "approved" in March 2024 without full transparency from our local leaders. There is also a lack of clarity and record keeping from the Tyrone Planning Commission on how or why the allowable size for building structures in the Business Technology Park zoning was amended from 200,000 sq. ft. in 2022 to 300,000 sq. ft in 2023. Based on our research, this Tyrone property location is not appropriate for a data center for reasons including but not limited to: (a) It is surrounded by residential properties (b) It sits atop a most significant groundwater recharge area, as mapped by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (c) Schools, churches, and other sensitive populations are in close proximity (d) It will require more buildout of power infrastructure, affecting many citizens and their properties in the path.

Water contamination

Trickum Creek runs through the proposed Microsoft data center site. The site also includes mapped wetlands and drains toward Line Creek, a critical water-supply shed. Is this an appropriate site for a data center, where discharges of chemical wastewater can overwhelm treatment plants or cause sewage backups?

NOISE POLLUTION

Noise sources operate continuously at data centers. There are fans, cooling systems, transformers, substations, and electrical equipment. Generator testing and emergency operation then adds louder or low-frequency noise. "You feel it in your bones," a resident living near a data center in Aurora, IL describes the sound.

AIR QUALITY

On-site generators emit particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds, which studies link to elevated rates of respiratory issues and asthma in neighboring communities.
